Housing Options Made Easy, Inc. is a not-for-profit company that provides supportive housing and community support services to individuals with mental health diagnoses.  We currently service six counties in New York including; Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Monroe and Niagara and have offices in Buffalo, Gowanda, Olean, Jamestown and Rochester.

Peer and Housing Specialist Requirements

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of High School Diploma or GED with three years of experience in Human Services with concentration in Mental Health. 
  • Academy of Peer Support Certification – APS Core Classes must be complete, and APS Certification application must be submitted to the committee for review within six (6) months of employment if not currently certified.
  • Must have a valid Class D Driver License, reliable transportation and automobile insurance. 
  • Must have had active participation in mental health self-help activities, peer support or peer advocacy programs or recipient-run organizations or similar experiences or programs. 
  • Knowledge of community support services/resources       

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • General knowledge of self-help resources in designated and surrounding counties and the ability to organize information in a useful manner. 
  • Sensitivity to the needs of individuals with mental disabilities and an ability to form caring, trusting relationships with peers. 
  • Refined written and verbal skills, computer literacy, group facilitation skills, and ability to establish relationships with professional organizations.
  • The coordinator will have specific knowledge of recipient benefits, governmental processes, consumer rights and high-level advocacy skills. 
  • He/She will be sensitive to the needs of the mental health peers and develop an ability to facilitate discussion and learning in a group setting. 
  • Ability to work cooperatively with agency staff, other peer programs and the treatment system.
  • Must perform duties in a professional manner and demonstrate verbal communication skills.
  • The ideal candidate has demonstrated ability to research and develop training material and has experience in public speaking or group facilitation.
  • Ability to take direction and follow-through on assignments both independently and with limited or remote supervision.
  • Must have an understanding and working knowledge of confidentiality laws regarding recipient’s records and personal/health information.
  • Must be proficient in MS Word/Excel/PowerPoint, internet and e-mail.
